SA vs India Fixtures

The three test series kicks off on Wednesday, in Chennai and is set to be one of the most interesting series of the year. India were robbed by some horrible decisions and could have won the test series down in Australia, however they did win the ODI series.

SA have the best pace attack in years and if they fire it will be difficult to see India be able to withstand the likes of Steyn and Morkel

Robin Peterson In Pro20 squad??

Strangely it seems Robin Peterson would prefer to play Pro20 Cricket than tour India?? Thats the case if The Official Cricket South Africa website is to be believed. Apparently he is turning out for the Warriors against Zimbabwe on Tuesday night! He has stayed behind for personal reasons (birth of his child – so maybe he will play) and is supposed to be joining the team early on Wednesday morning.

This is taken directly form the article: ”In the opening match at Sahara Oval St George’s in Port Elizabeth tomorrow, Zimbabwe Chevrons will face a fired up Chevrolet Warriors team, who will be looking to quickly erase the memories of losing last week’s MTN Domestic Championship final to Nashua Titans at SuperSport Park.

The Warriors will be at full strength with the likes of this year’s leading List A wicket-taker, Rusty Theron, left-arm spinner, Robin Peterson, fellow spinner, Johan Botha and the opening pair of Sinethemba Mjekula and Lonwabo Tsotsobe.”

SA Emerging Squad

This tournament is a benchmark to get the fringe players into the National side and has helped players like Philander make a name for himself. SA has performed well in this competition – often SA have taken players with international experience which generally the other sides don’t have. Watch out for Wayne Parnell fresh from the u19 World cup. Dean Elgar is a definite up and coming youngster to watch and Henry Davids has had the season of his life.

“We have won this competition in the last two years, beating Australia and New Zealand in the final. This is a tough competition and the experience gained by our players is invaluable for the later international tours”, Vince van der Bijl, Cricket South Africa’s High Performance general manager said.

Ahmed Amla (capt), Yusuf Abdullah, Werner Coetzee, Henry Davids, CJ de Villiers, Dean Elgar, Imraan Khan, Rory Kleinveldt, Wayne Parnell, Daryn Smit (wk), Blake Snijman, Thandi Tshabalala, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Vaughan van Jaarsveld.

Black Batsman and All-Rounders not good Enough according to Majola

Gerald Majola has come out with a statement which might bring one to question his knowledge of provincial cricket. He said: “we have to understand that there are special positions. We need a balanced team, and that there are specialist positions. For instance, we are not blessed with a lot of black batsmen and all-rounders, but lots of black bowlers, and we have to take note of that. We have to start producing them.” (click here for the full article)

The Supersport Series, is the 4 day provincial format which is the only competition that can be compared to the upcoming test match series in India. If Majola had bothered to check the statistics for the series he might be surprised to learn that Henry Davids, scored the most runs for the season, continuing his rich vein of form from the end of last season. He managed 3 centuries and 5 scores above 50 taking him to 817 runs at an average of 48.05 and is the only player to get above 800 runs for the season.

There are 3 players of colour in the top 10 for the most runs scored, the other two being Imraan Khan and and Ahmed Amla (These days its hard to know who is a quota player and who is not – Luke Watson the stormers ex captain is black according to some click here for the story and picture of him)

If Majola wanted to pursue this a bit further and checked the statistics by average, again he would find a player of colour leading the way in the form of JP Duminy, with a massive 93.25 average. Davids is in the top ten here as well, with Vernon Philander 11th averaging 43.25

One would think that Prince, Hashim Amla, Gibbs, Duminy, Davids, Alviro Petersen and Loots Bosman would be disappointed to hear that there aren’t many black batsmen as all of these guys deserve to play at the very least in the SA A side (most of them have or have been selected)

On the All-rounder side, Philander averaged 43. 25 with the bat and 16.13  with the ball.  I am not sure what Majola sees in the transformation department but any player that averages above 35 with the bat and under 25 with the ball is going places, and a player averaging 43 with the bat and 16 with the ball should already be there!!!!
