Zimbabwe – Champions of the world

Ray Mali, the president of the ICC, has told the Zimbabwe Herald that he believes the current squad, if kept together for the next 3 years, will become the number one side in the world. It is difficult to fathom how a man who is president of the ICC, can say something like this: “if they are given a chance to play for the next three years as one unit – they will be at the top of world rankings. It is not a dream, I believe it can be done.”

I don’t want to be nasty about Zimbabwe as they have improved significantly in the last few years however the standard of cricket around the world is so high for Zimbabwe to get there is going to take more than 3 years!!(or a miracle)

Bearing in mind that the Zimbabwean side that played South Africa in the 3 ODI’s was very similar to the squad that played South Africa “A’ in a 4 day game recently. South Africa took an unusually strong “A” squad to Zimbabwe – an astonishing decision by the selectors given the context of the tour. (there were only two 4 day matches) The SA “A” side dished a severe hiding in the 2nd game. http://content-rsa.cricinfo.com/zimbabwe/engine/match/305687.html  (if you don’t want to check the link it was by an innings and 219 runs)

There seems to be an improvement in the facilities and the structure of the game in Zimbabwe, which is good news for future players. The current squad is young and hopefully will improve but there is no ways this side can make the top 3 let alone be at the top in 3 years.

I am worried about the ICC if the president says such outlandish things!!!
