Paul WHO?

The South African convenor of selectors believes that “The only difference between the South African and Australian bowling attacks is that the Proteas do not have a spinner of the calibre of Shane Warne.” I assume he was talking about the test match arena, and he went on to say: “Our seam attack is equal to that of Australia. The difference is that the work load of our bowlers increases markedly because we do not have a bowler such as Warne or Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan.”

Hold on a moment there Mr Lorgat, are you not forgetting the last tour? I might be mistaken, I often am, but I just cant seem to recall the Australian version of Shaun Pollock, Glenn Mcgrath bowling spin in a test match. I am pretty sure Glenn would insist he would rather not bowl than show how ineffective he has become in the test arena and start sending down innocuous deliveries. If there was ever a sign that Polly is reaching a stage where his position in the test side needs to be re-assessed, the six step run up was it.

Aside from the cringe I immediately got after reading what Lorgat had said, I have to agree with him. We don’t have a spinner in the class of Warne or Murali. The recall of Gogga as he is affectionately known, is certainly a surprise to many, if not all of us around the country. This season has seen Adams watch the action from the sidelines in the MTN Domestic Championship, and send down eight overs in the Supersport Series. It is clear that the selection of Adams hasn’t come from these performances, nor his 9 overs for 54 runs in the recent match between the Rest of South Africa and India. A bizarre decision, unless he has been playing local league cricket and producing phenomenal results, one must assume the fact that Mr Adams has been South Africas best spinner since the isolation era, is the only reason he has been included. His last appearance for the Proteas was against New Zealand in 2004.

One would have thought that Adams would have been dropped from the squad for the Pakistan series, yet Lorgat has kept him, maybe as a fielder??
