Normally there would be no interest in a SAA provincial one-day challenge match between KZN and EP. However this match has two players that the South African public should keep a look out for. The first is Jon-Jon Smuts, who top scored for EP making 56. This is his second 50 in this format, making 50 on his debut. (Eastern Province v Border)
Jon-Jon Smuts grew up in Grahamstown, attending Graeme College. He broke all sorts of records set by past pupils, finishing up at the end of 2006. He is currently studying at NMMU, and is also a top tennis player, playing in the SASSU tournament this December.
He has been rated the best schoolboy cricketer to emerge from Graeme College in 134 years. Pay close attention to him, he will go far in world cricket.
Jon-Jon’s statistics include:
-played 80 matches for the Graeme College 1st team
-represented E.P. U18 team for 3 years i.e. 2004, 2005 and captain in 2006
-scored 4220 runs at an average of 57,8 runs per innings
-scored 14 centuries. His highest was 190 runs (see detail below)
-took 141 wickets at an average per wicket of 19.4 runs
The other player that caught my eye was Mfuneko Ngam. Ngam burst onto the scene in the late 90’s and debuted for SA in 2000. He only played 3 tests before being plagued by injury and has fallen off the radar. He bowled 6 overs for 20 runs and hopefully he can get back to his best in the future.
