IPL Auction

The fixtures have yet to be announced, however the auction kicks off on the 6th of February, with 111 players up for auction. Each franchise has a maximum of US$2m to spend on their overseas signings in the auction, it is likely that only about 16 players – or two per franchise – will be chosen out of the 111. Kevin Pietersen has a base price of 1.35 million and the experts reckon he will be worth more than the 1.5 million paid for Dhoni.

Modi said the demand for England’s top stars would be high. “If you look at the base price it’s close to US$250,000 and US$350,000 a week for each week he [Pietersen] plays, which is comparable to the top soccer players around the world,” he told Setanta Sports News. “Andrew Flintoff has a minimum base price of US$950,000, but he’ll probably go for a higher figure. It’ll be quite competitive. All the teams can afford it. Everyone’s trying to get England’s top players in their team.”

England Chase 294 after Panesar picks up 6-37

Monty Panesar has brought England back into the game by picking up 6-37 in the second innings. England require a further 218 runs with 9 wickets in hand. The weather is horrible around the UK and may prolong the result. There are still two days left for England to make a remarkable comebnack and win the test chasing 294 for victory – it would be the most successful chase at Old Trafford.

New Zealand have Ross Taylor’s 154 not out helped set up a massive total of 381 in the first innings. England could only manage 202 in reply. As mentioned it was Monty Panesar that has helped England have a sniff in this game. Strangely 4 out of the 6 were LBW decisions – most of them looked like good decisions as seen above.

Prediction? ? New Zealand have plenty on the board and with Vettori getting a five wickets in the first and Panesar 6 wickets in the second innings the pitch looks like it will do too much for England to pull off an incredible win.

England vs India 2nd Test Day 3 Preview

India are 259/3 going into the start of day 3.  Tendulkar and Ganguly are at the wicket with Laxman and Dhoni still to come before the tail starts. England have been chasing leather and need to get some control in the first session today, if they cant pick up a wicket,  expect to see India at 350 plus at lunch.

The positive side for England is that India has a monster tail. As said previously, England has great bowlers for a county side and they could clean up the less talented tail with innocuous deliveries that the top order would smirk at. However if England can make an early breakthrough before lunch and try restrict the Indians scoring, India could be out for 370 which is a score England will be more that happy with.

I predict Tendulkar posting a big hundred with support from Ganguly and Laxman. Dhoni will behave like he is part of the tail swinging at everything however today he will not be as lucky as previously and will be out for less than twenty, whilst the rest of the tail is cleaned up for under thirty. Essentially England need to get three wickets cheaply and things will fall apart for the Indians. I don’t see it happening and I see Tendulkar walking into lunch with a hundred to his name.

The only thing I am not sure of is what the weather will be like as there was plenty of rain about England last night so if Trent Bridge has been graced with more rain the English will be smiling. More than likely it will be an overcast day and hopefully Sidebottom who I rte highly can the ball in the right place. He can be a very good bowler if he gets his line and length right but seems to be a “form” bowler and can either delight or disgust the supporters.

England vs India 2nd Test

England looks set to be chasing a huge score just to be in the game, as said in my previous post they re short of a wicket taking bowler. They have a decent club line up but the international sphere, they are going to struggle without their main bowlers. There is no one with frightening pace nor someone who can bowl the unplayable ball.

However they do have bowlers who can capitalise on negative play by getting it in the area, but India have classy batsmen. Currently they are 72/0 and 400 is not out of the equation if England arent careful. Panesar is the only quality bowler in the pack and should be on as early as possible – I hope he can restore some order in this game otherwise it will be a run away victory for India
